Warren French and David Allbright’s article Resolving a Through Discourse (, Vol. 17, No. 2) looks at how organizations can deal with moral conflicts through open dialogue. Moral conflict happens when people have different ethical views and cannot easily agree on what is right. The authors argue that rules alone are not enough; and mutual understanding are essential.

The article begins by explaining the nature of ethics and moral conflict, showing that disagreements often come from differences in and reasoning. It then discusses moral reasoning and behaviour, noting that how people think about ethics directly influences how they act in workplace situations.

French and Allbright draw on Kurtines’ idea of communicative actions, which helps categorize different styles of communication. They describe three main types: ordinary communication, which is everyday talk without much reflection; strategic communication, which is aimed at achieving personal goals; and discursive communication, which is more open, respectful, and focused on understanding others.

The study highlights that the style of communication is closely linked to moral reasoning. People who use discursive communication tend to show deeper ethical thinking and are better at resolving conflicts fairly. This suggests that encouraging open and respectful dialogue can improve ethical decision-making in organizations.

In simple terms, the article shows that moral conflicts at work are best solved not just by following rules, but by talking openly, listening carefully, and respecting different viewpoints. This kind of communication helps people learn from each other and build fairer, more ethical workplaces.
