Professionalism, Profession and the Virtues of the Good Physician

True professionalism comes from the physician’s character, not just rules or credentials. Virtue ethics highlights the importance of developing good habits and moral excellence, connecting personal qualities directly to patient care.
Key virtues of a good physician include trustworthiness, benevolence, honesty, courage, compassion, and truthfulness. These guide doctors to respect patient vulnerability, admit limits, face risks, and provide clear information. Practical wisdom, or phronesis, ties these virtues together, helping physicians make balanced decisions in uncertain or complex situations. Unlike abstract principles or outcome-based ethics, virtue ethics emphasizes the kind of person the physician becomes over time.
To strengthen professionalism, medical education should nurture character through role models, ethics discussions, and exposure to moral examples in literature and the humanities. Professional organizations must prioritize patient welfare over commercial interests, and medical schools should address serious character issues before students enter practice. Medicine is ultimately a covenant of trust between physician and patient, where integrity, competence, and virtue safeguard the moral foundation of the profession.
