Practical Ethics (Third Edition)

Practical (3rd edition, ) by Peter Singer explains how ethical thinking can be applied to real and often challenging moral questions. Ethical thinking begins with the principle that the interests of all beings capable of suffering deserve equal consideration. This foundation challenges discrimination based on group membership and establishes a consistent basis for moral reasoning.

From this foundation, questions about abortion and infanticide emerge, centering on when life gains moral significance and how personhood should be defined. These issues highlight the difficulty of determining moral status and the responsibilities that follow from recognizing it. Considerations of personhood connect directly to euthanasia and end-of-life decisions, where autonomy, relief from suffering, and quality of life become central. Ethical reasoning here requires balancing respect for individual choice with concern for overall well-being. Concerns about well-being also extend to the treatment of people with disabilities. Fairness and respect for their interests demand equal recognition of their lives, challenging that might undervalue them and reinforcing the principle of equal consideration.

Extending moral concern beyond humans leads to the question of animals. Practices such as factory farming and certain kinds of research cause suffering, and taking the capacity to suffer seriously requires reevaluating these practices and broadening the scope of ethical responsibility. The same principle of responsibility applies to global , where the suffering of distant others calls for moral action. Distance does not diminish the obligation to reduce harm and improve welfare, showing that ethical concern must reach across borders. This widening circle of responsibility continues with environmental challenges such as climate change. Human actions affect both present and future well-being, making the protection of the planet essential for sustaining life and ensuring fairness across generations.

Across all these issues, ethical reasoning emphasizes consistency in moral principles, careful attention to consequences for welfare, and awareness of how actions shape the well-being of others.
