Designing and conducting focus group interviews requires a carefully recruited group of five to ten participants who share similar characteristics to ensure a productive discussion.

The process is led by a moderator skillful in group discussions who establishes a permissive environment and an assistant moderator who handles logistics and note-taking.

A successful session begins with a standard introduction involving a welcome, an overview of the topic, and the establishment of ground rules before the first question is posed.

Moderators are encouraged to use open-ended questions that focus on attributes and influences rather than simple “yes” or “no” responses.

Throughout the session, the moderator uses techniques like five-second pauses and probes to encourage participants to explain their views further.

Analysis of the data should be systematic and verifiable, beginning during the group session and continuing through a series of steps that include debriefing, individual group analysis, and later comparing results across multiple groups.

When interpreting the findings, researchers must look beyond the actual words to consider the context, internal consistency, and intensity of the comments.

One practical method for identifying themes is the “long table” strategy, where transcripts are cut and taped onto large sheets of paper to cluster related points of view.

Finally, the results should be reported using a communication strategy that meets the client’s expectations and enlightens them with new insights rather than repeating common knowledge.
