Development as Freedom
Source: WeLibAmartya Sen’s book Development as Freedom says that development is not just about money or economic growth. Instead, it’s about giving people more real freedoms in their lives. Income and wealth are important, but they are only tools. The real goal is to help people live the kind of life they value by removing barriers like poverty, oppression, poor health care, or lack of education.
Sen explains that freedom is both the end goal of development and the main way to achieve it. People should be seen as active participants who shape change, not just as passive receivers of aid.
He identifies five key types of freedom that work together: political freedoms like free speech and voting, economic facilities such as access to jobs and markets, social opportunities like education and health care, transparency guarantees that build trust in society, and protective security that provides safety nets against extreme hardship. These freedoms support each other—for example, education improves health and job prospects, while political rights help prevent crises such as famines.

Sen also introduces the capability approach: instead of judging poverty only by income, we should look at what people can actually do and be. For instance, some groups in rich countries may have shorter life expectancies than people in poorer regions because of differences in social support and community systems.
In short, Sen argues that true development means building societies where people have the freedom to live fulfilling lives, supported by strong economic, social, and political institutions.
