is the fourth studio by the Norwegian project Burzum, recorded in March and released on January 31, . The album was created by , the sole member of Burzum, during a tumultuous period in his life, shortly before he was imprisoned for murder and church arson. This context adds a layer of complexity to the album, which is often described as both hypnotic and introspective, diverging from the more aggressive sounds typical of its contemporaries in the black metal scene.

Musically, Filosofem is characterized by its lo-fi production and a unique blend of black metal with dark ambient elements. Vikernes deliberately recorded the album using minimal equipment to achieve a raw sound. He plugged his guitar directly into a stereo amplifier and utilized an old fuzz pedal, opting for a subpar microphone to capture his vocals. This approach resulted in an atmospheric and immersive listening experience that evokes feelings of isolation and . The opening track, “Dunkelheit” (meaning “Darkness”), has become emblematic of Burzum’s sound and is often regarded as one of the definitive tracks in black metal.

The album consists of six tracks, including “Jesu død” (Jesus’ Death) and “Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament,” each contributing to its overarching themes of existential contemplation and nihilism. The lengthy composition “Rundtgåing av den Transcendentale Egenhetensstøtte” (Tour Around the Transcendental Pillar of Singularity) stretches over 25 minutes, showcasing Vikernes’s penchant for creating immersive soundscapes that draw listeners into a trance-like state.

Upon its release, Filosofem received positive reviews and achieved notable success within the independent scene, particularly in Europe. Its influence has extended far beyond its initial reception, inspiring countless bands across various subgenres of metal and electronic music. The album’s unique sound has been credited with laying the groundwork for the isolationist black metal movement, which emphasizes atmospheric and ambient qualities.

Despite its acclaim, Filosofem is also surrounded by controversy due to Vikernes’s criminal and his subsequent views on race and society. Nevertheless, it remains a significant work within the black metal genre, illustrating both the artistic potential of music as a form of expression and the darker aspects of its creator’s life. The legacy of Filosofem continues to resonate within the metal , solidifying Burzum’s place in music history.
