Almost a century later, in 1982, it was translated into English, making Durkheim’s ideas accessible to a global audience and helping shape modern sociological research.
The Rules of Sociological Method explains that sociology is the scientific study of social facts. These are patterns of behavior, beliefs, and feelings that exist outside individual people and influence them, such as laws, morals, language, and social norms. Durkheim says social facts should be treated as real and observable, not explained only by psychology, and that sociologists must study them fairly and without personal bias.
The book gives guidance on how to look at social facts carefully, how to tell what is normal in society and what is unhealthy, how to group different kinds of social phenomena, and how to explain their causes by comparing different cases. Durkheim stresses that social causes should be explained by other social facts rather than by individual motives, and that sociology grows by comparing how societies differ.
Overall, the book provides a clear foundation for sociology, showing how society can be studied in a careful and organized way so that the discipline stands as an independent science with simple rules for evidence, explanation, and proof.
