PRA draws its roots from activist participatory research, agroecosystem analysis, applied anthropology, farming systems field research, and rapid rural appraisal (RRA). Unlike RRA, where information is primarily elicited and extracted by outsiders, PRA emphasizes knowledge that is shared and owned by local people.
Common participatory methods include mapping and modeling, transect walks, matrix scoring, seasonal calendars, trend and change analysis, well-being and wealth ranking, and analytical diagramming. PRA has been applied in diverse fields such as natural resource management, agriculture, poverty alleviation, social programs, health, and food security.
