The song Ghoomar from the 2018 film Padmaavat, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a Rajasthani folk-inspired track sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Swaroop Khan, with music composed by Bhansali and lyrics by A. M. Turaz and Swaroop Khan. Recorded on July 12, 2016, at Wow & Flutter Studio in Mumbai, the song features Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati performing the traditional Ghoomar dance, choreographed by Kruti Mahesh and Jyoti D. Tommar, alongside sixty chorus dancers. Padukone trained for twelve days, three hours daily, with Rajasthani dance expert Jyoti D. Tommar, executing 66 twirls in a 30kg lehenga costing INR 2 million, with jewelry made from 400kg of gold. Released on October 26, 2017, via T-Series, the song garnered over 10 million YouTube views in 24 hours, trending globally and reaching 100 million views by January 27, 2018. It was also dubbed in Tamil (“Goomar”), Telugu (“Jhoommani Jhoommani Aade”), and Kannada, with versions released on January 12, 2018, and later for Kannada.
Ghoomar sparked significant controversy, primarily from Rajput groups like the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, who argued it misrepresented Rajput culture and history. Critics, including Heena Singh Judeo of Chhattisgarh’s former royal family, claimed Rajput queens never performed Ghoomar publicly, especially not in “indecent” attire, as Padukone’s bare midriff was deemed inappropriate. The lyric “ralak reet sab jag ki chhod kar” (discarding all traditions) was criticized as unfit for a queen who symbolized honor. The Karni Sena also alleged the song misrepresented Ghoomar as a Mewar dance, when it originates from Marwar. Protests escalated, with the Karni Sena vandalizing St. Paul’s School in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, on January 15, 2018, during a student performance of the song, damaging property and leading to four arrests. District education officers in Dewas, Mahisagar, Bhavnagar, and Udaipur issued circulars banning the song in schools, citing “social and cultural controversy” and threats of “undesirable incidents,” though some were later withdrawn.
To address objections, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) required modifications, including covering Padukone’s midriff with CGI fabric in the music video, a change implemented without announcement before the film’s January 25, 2018, release. Despite alterations, protests continued, with the Karni Sena demanding a total ban, alleging the film distorted history. The song’s Rs 12 crore production cost and its visual grandeur, featuring pale golden and brown hues, were overshadowed by these disputes. Ghoomar remains a landmark track, praised for its cultural richness but marred by debates over historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
