Public Administration: Traditions of Inquiry and Philosophies of Knowledge (2010) explains how the field of public administration understands and produces knowledge. It begins with the long-standing question of whether the discipline is more like an art shaped by values or a science grounded in facts, showing that no single definition fully captures its nature. The book describes the intellectual roots of public administration, how its identity has shifted over time, and why debates about its methods and philosophy persist. It presents the logic of inquiry in the field by outlining different ways of knowing, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research. Each of these approaches is shown as a way to build theory and understand public administration phenomena, with different assumptions about reality and evidence. The text emphasizes the rich diversity of research traditions, encouraging readers to see this variety not as a problem but as a strength that reflects the complexity of public governance and policy. Throughout, understanding how different philosophical perspectives shape questions, methods, and interpretations deepens insight into both the practice and study of public administration.
So basically, buku Public Administration: Traditions of Inquiry and Philosophies of Knowledge karya Norma M. Riccucci ini tuh like literally ngebahas gimana caranya public administration sebagai disiplin ilmu itu understand dan produce knowledge. Well... you knowwww, ada perdebatan klasik yang sampe sekarang masih ongoing: apakah public administration itu lebih ke art yang value-driven atau science yang fact-based? Ternyata gak ada definisi tunggal yang bisa fully capture nature-nya, which is totally fine!
Buku ini ngajak lo buat explore intellectual roots dari public administration, gimana identitasnya berubah over time, dan kenapa debat soal methods sama philosophy-nya masih terus berlanjut. Yang menarik tuh dia nge-break down berbagai logic of inquiry - mulai dari qualitative, quantitative, sampe mixed-method research.
Gw sih lebih prefer kalo lo embrace this diversity instead of nyari satu "correct" way aja.
