Slowly We Rot is the debut album by American death metal band Obituary, released in 1989 through Roadrunner Records. It is widely regarded as a landmark in the death metal genre, showcasing guttural vocals, double bass drumming, and blast beats that set the tone for future developments in extreme metal. The album marks the only appearance of bassist Daniel Tucker and features lead guitarist Allen West, who left shortly after its release but returned for their third album, The End Complete. A remastered version was released in 1997, and a live rendition titled Slowly We Rot: Live & Rotting was recorded in October 2020 and released in August 2022.
The album’s composition reflects a raw and unrelenting approach to death metal. Music journalist described it as “a remorseless assault against the senses,” with downtuned riffs, tempo changes, and John Tardy‘s distinctive death growls creating a visceral listening experience. While rooted in thrash influences, Obituary pushed the boundaries of heaviness, incorporating slower, doom-like sections alongside faster thrash elements. Tracks such as “Deadly Intentions” and “Bloodsoaked” exemplify this dichotomy, blending slow, punishing riffs with chaotic speed.
Interestingly, Slowly We Rot was not initially conceived as a full-length album. The first seven tracks originated from an eight-track demo that impressed Roadrunner Records enough to secure a deal. Five additional tracks were later recorded with more advanced equipment to complete the album. This difference in production quality between the demo tracks and later recordings has been noted by critics but does not detract from the album’s impact.
The record is celebrated for its simplicity and aggression, embodying a “less is more” ethos that influenced many subsequent death metal bands. Despite its raw production and limited riff variety compared to modern standards, Slowly We Rot remains essential listening for fans of early death metal. Its heavy yet accessible songwriting laid the groundwork for Obituary’s enduring legacy in the genre.
