Vina Panduwinata‘s debut album, Citra Biru, was released in September 1981 under Jackson Records, marking her entry into Indonesia’s music scene. Born on August 6, 1959, in Bogor, West Java, to a diplomat father, Raden Panduwinata, and Albertine Supit, Vina spent her childhood moving between Bogor, New Delhi, Wassenaar, and West Germany. In Germany, she studied at Yamaha Music School for four years and recorded singles for RCA Records, including Java and Single Bar (1978) and Sorry Sorry and Touch Me (1979). Returning to Indonesia in 1981, she met musician Mogi Darusman, who introduced her to Jackson Records.
The album, recorded at Jackson Recording Studio in Indonesia, was produced by Addie MS, a prominent conductor and arranger. It features ten tracks: “Mawar Merah,” “Citra Biru,” “Aku Cinta Kau,” “Bahagia,” “Rindu,” “Khusuk,” “Denny,” “Jejaka Sendu,” “Murka,” and “Salam Kami Dalam Lagu.” Songwriters included James F. Sundah, Dodo Zakaria, and Chris M. Manusama, with Billy J. Budiarjo contributing on electric and acoustic guitars. The title track, “Citra Biru,” was released as a single in June 1981, three months before the album.
Citra Biru blends pop, jazz, and ballad styles, showcasing Vina’s breathy vocal technique. The recording process involved collaboration with seasoned Indonesian musicians, ensuring a polished sound that appealed to a broad audience. The album’s release coincided with Vina’s rising popularity, driven by her unique voice and stage presence.
