Future Shock

“Future shock” is a psychobiological condition characterized by shattering stress and disorientation induced in individuals when they are subjected to too much change in too short a time. This phenomenon arises from a widening lag between the accelerating pace of environmental change and the limited pace of human response. The core theoretical framework centers on the “800th lifetime,” representing the current era where the scale, scope, and pace of change have reached a qualitative break with all past human experience. The book is organized into six primary parts:
Part One: The Death of Permanence This section establishes the accelerative thrust of change as a concrete force that reaches deep into personal lives. It introduces the concept of the 800th lifetime to illustrate that the majority of material goods and technological advancements used today have been developed within the current generation. The framework identifies a shift toward “super-industrialism,” where the rate of change itself becomes a key component of the environment, shortening the “durational expectancy” of situations and ending the era of permanence.
Part Two: Transience The analysis focuses on the “soft” or human side of reality, specifically the shortening duration of human relationships with the environment. Transience is categorized through five types of relationships: things, places, people, organizations, and information. Key distinctions include the “throw-away society” regarding products, the “new nomads” in relation to geographic mobility, “modular man” concerning fragmented human contact, and “ad-hocracy” as the collapse of traditional hierarchies into temporary, task-oriented organizational structures.
Part Three: Novelty The narrative framework explores the intrusion of unprecedented newness into daily existence, driven by scientific trajectories and the “experience makers”. This part examines how technological advancements, such as biological engineering and simulated environments, create situations for which previous personal experience no longer applies. It specifically identifies the “fractured family” as a consequence, where traditional structures are replaced by a variety of experimental and temporary familial arrangements.
Part Four: Diversity The concept of “overchoice” is presented as a central characteristic of tomorrow, where a surfeit of subcults and lifestyle options forces individuals to make constant, complex decisions. Rather than a standardized society, super-industrialism leads to extreme fragmentation and a “superabundance of selves”. This diversity, when converging with transience and novelty, creates an environment so complex that it threatens millions with adaptive breakdown.
Part Five: The Limits of Adaptability This part defines the physical and psychological boundaries of the human “biosystem”. It explains that every effort to adapt to novelty triggers biological events and changes in body chemistry, such as orientation responses and adaptive reactions, which exact a physical price. Psychologically, the section describes “decisional overstimulation” and cognitive overload, which can lead to irrational behavior, withdrawal, or a total confusional breakdown when the individual’s adaptive capacity is overwhelmed.
Part Six: Strategies for Survival The final section outlines a transition from technocratic planning to “social futurism” to prevent mass future shock. Proposed strategies include “personal stability zones” to pace individual lives, educational reform that shifts into the “future tense,” and the taming of technology through social and political regulators. The objective is the conscious human guidance of the evolutionary process to ensure a “soft landing” into the super-industrial future.
