In August 1985, Sheila Majid made a bold entrance into the Malaysian music scene with her debut album Dimensi Baru. The album, faced early challenges in securing a distributor because its blend of light jazz, R&B, and pop was unconventional for Malaysia at the time. After three years of persistence, EMI Music Malaysia agreed to distribute the album, marking a crucial turning point for Sheila’s career
A highlight of the album is the song “Dia,” which stands out as a heartfelt pop ballad, originally a hit song by Vina Panduwinata, released in 1984 on her album Citra Ceria. Sheila, a self-professed fan of Vina, has often credited Vina as a major influence on her own artistry, even performing “Dia” as a tribute to her idol in concerts.
Dimensi Baru thus not only launched Sheila Majid’s illustrious career, the album’s success laid the groundwork for Sheila’s international appeal, as a testament to the emotional depth and authenticity that would define her legacy as Malaysia’s Queen of Jazz.
